What should I expect from the Boldface Writers Conference?

The short answer is: everything you could hope for (within reason). As the only conference in the country that caters specially to emerging writers, Boldface doesn’t invite a slew of agents and editors, so don’t worry about preparing a pitch or having a stockpile of business cards (although if you do have such a stockpile, that’s pretty cool—you can bring it). What you can and should expect is a whole lot of learning, inspiration, and fun. Attendees come away with new friends, new ideas, and a brand new set of writing tools to improve their manuscripts or begin something entirely new. By attending our writers conference, you’re taking the next step in your development as a writer—and you ARE a writer. Call yourself one with confidence!

“What started out as ‘Why did I sign up, why am I here’ turned into ‘Why wouldn’t I sign up, I deserve to be here.’ It was fun to be in a space that I felt comfortable in and creatively BOLD.”

-Erica Navarro

How can I make the most of my time at Boldface?

One thing you don’t need to do is overcomplicate it. We want you to be prepared—that’s why we’re making this post—but we don’t want you to feel overly anxious or overwhelmed. Boldface is a supportive environment. We’re here first and foremost to help you feel comfortable with the delicate process of putting yourself and your creative work out there. With that in mind, here are a few tips for getting the most out of attending this year’s conference:

    1. Do your homework. You’ll have the chance to meet and hear from our wonderful featured writers. Read their bios and check out their work ahead of time! You can do the same for our workshop leaders; each Boldface teacher is a part of the University of Houston’s world-renowned Creative Writing Program!
    2. Challenge yourself, but take care of yourself. We certainly encourage conference participants to take advantage of all that’s offered, but feel free to take a break if you need one. Boldface is a learning experience, not a boot camp. While attendance at your group’s workshop sessions is mandatory, other daily events are optional, and there’s plenty of room to relax and recharge.
    3. Get in a writing conference state of mind. Come with an open mind and a positive attitude and outlook, and you won’t leave disappointed. Come willing to meet new people and make friends, and you undoubtedly will. Networking at Boldface happens naturally. All that’s required is your presence. Be yourself!
